I'm also looking to move away from Gentoo after using it solid since 2005. Not only because of the issues you've mentioned, but particularly the lack of KDE 4.1 in portage. I've been looking into ArchLinux, a binary distro which gives the control of Gentoo and rolling releases (something I really love about Gentoo).

Living in a tiny village about 50 miles outside of the cultural center of the universe,

Bakersfield, my local bar has been playing call shot pool without any rule set for many

years. If there ever where any rules they have become muddled. I have been playing for about

50 years myself and have seen many variations but never a written rule set for call shot in

its truest form. The burden or providing a rule set for call shot tournament has fallen on

my shoulders. I couldn't find such a thing on the web so I am formulating a set hoping that

if the locals at least start to follow a set that they are somewhat familiar with, then

eventual they may even evolve up to the standardized call pocket that we all know and love.

Some questions have popped up and I could use some input from bar players (not call pocket

league players) to help me manicure these rules.

If the object ball brushes a rail going in... is that a bank?

If the object ball rattles the pocket going in... is that a bank?

How many balls must go to a rail to make a legal break?

How many times can the same shooter attempt the break?

How many seconds does a ball have to fall to be counted by the play that just shot it after

it has come to rest.

When shooting out of the kitchen after an opponents scratch, how much of the intended object

ball must be out of the kitchen?

When shooting out of the kitchen after an opponents scratch, how much of the cue ball must

be out of the kitchen?

If a ball is rolling toward a rail but is interferred with by an other ball already frozen

to a rail, is it assumed that the rolling ball has reached a rail? That is to say , is the

ball that is frozen to a rail considerd part of the rail?

When two balls are frozen together, how must they be shot to avoid a "push shot" foul that

violates the momentary hit concept?

Is a split shot legal or must the cue clearly strike the legal ball first.

There will no doubt be more issues brought up .
This is my existing draft . Keep in mind that I all ways get outvoted to simply play call

pocket...The RULES
----------------------------------------------------------

BAR RULES FOR 8-BALL

"GENTLEMENS CALLSHOT": This is a game of honor. In the absence of a referee, it is up to the

shooter to specifically call ALL of the caroms, kiss’s, double kiss’s, kicks, banks and

combinations to be involved in the object line. If some variation of the original intention

occurs, it is the gentleman shooting who voluntarily relinquishes his turn and announces

“bad hit” whether the intended ball is potted in the correct pocket or not. (It is customary

to indicate all expected nuances on the object line on non strait in shots.)
----- OR-----

"CALL POCKET": This game doesn’t take into account any variation of kiss's caroms, banks and

combinations (all of which are legal). The only concern is that the ball is potted in the

pocket indicated by the shooter. It is the shooter’s responsibility to make his intention

know before he shoots. Call pocket (not call shot) rules will be used in tournament play.

==================================

The Game: The game is played with a cue ball and fifteen object balls; numbered from 1 to

15. Balls are racked at the foot spot, with 8-ball in center of triangle. One Player or side

must pocket balls numbered from 1 to 7 (solids) or from 9 to 15 (stripes). Opponent pockets

group of balls not selected by player with original choice. For example, if the player with

the first choice chooses to score balls from 1 to 7, the opponent must pocket balls from 9

to 15.
The player (or team) pocketing all the balls in his numerical group first and then legally

pocketing 8-ball (without fouling), wins the game.

Break: Order of play can be determined by: (1) incoming challenger racking or (2) the loser

of the flip of a coin racking or (3)lagging. ((The player racking pays for that game.)) If

less than 4 balls of any color either go to a rail or pocket (to make a legal break) ,the

balls are re-racked an re-broken by the same player until a legal break is achieved .

Starting player is not compelled to make a choice on opening shot, nor must he call his shot

on the break. If opening player pockets one or more balls on the break he has his choice of

the high or low group. If the breaker fails to pocket a ball on the break, the incoming

player accepts balls in position and has his choice of the high or low balls. The table is

always open after the break and remains so until a ball is legally pocketed. All balls are

neutral except the 8-ball which can only be struck first when it is the intended ball. The

8-ball may be used in a combination if the shooter strikes one of his own balls first. On an

open table a stripe may be struck first to sink a solid.

Combination shots are allowed at all times (see definitions).

Loss of Game:

If a player accidentally pockets the 8-ball before he pockets all the balls of his numerical

group, he loses the game.
When playing for the 8-ball, player must hit that ball first. Pocketing the 8-ball on a bad

hit is a game loss.
Since a player is required to call his shot when playing for the 8-ball, he loses the game

if the 8-ball drops into a pocket not designated on the call.
When a player is shooting to make the 8-ball, he loses the game if cue ball scratches or

leaves the table.
Knocking the 8-ball off the table at any time is a game loss.

NOTES AND DEFINITIONS:

Scratch: Whenever the cue ball is pocketed or knocked off the table, the incoming shooter

has “ ball in hand in the kitchen”. The kitchen is defined as the area from the head rail up

to but not including the head string. The incoming shooter may place the cue ball anywhere

in the kitchen and shoot at any object outside of the kitchen. Once the cue ball has struck

any legal object or a rail outside of the kitchen, it may then legally hit any other object

within the kitchen.

Note 1: If a ball which has been hanging in a pocket for more than a few seconds suddenly

falls in, it is to not be placed back on the table, but left in the pocket as “act of God”.

Opposing shooter continues his play. The incoming player takes "ownership" of the table once

he or his stick touch any ball or any part of the table.

Note 2: You cannot play the 8-ball while simultaneously playing the last ball of your

category. The 8-ball must be a separate shot.

Note 3: Pocketed Balls - Balls must remain in a pocket to be legal. If a ball goes in a

pocket, but bounces back onto the playing surface, it is not considered pocketed. If it is

the 8-ball, it is not considered either a win or loss. If it is the cue ball, it is not

considered a scratch.

NON-FOULS: It is not a foul to unintentionally move a ball with anything other than the tip

of the stick (i.e. clothing, the side of the cue stick, hand, etc). The opponent (the

offended party) has the option of replacing the ball(s) to anywhere he thinks that it was or

allowing the play to continue as the table lies. It is not a foul to fail to drive a ball to

a rail nor is it a foul to fail to move a ball more than the slightest perceptible distance.

All legal shots must be executed with the tip of the cue.

FOULS: An illegal shot resulting in the loss of turn at the table
1. A legal shot does not occur
2. Striking and opponents ball or the 8-ball prior to contacting ones own group ball (except

on an open table).
3. The shooter does not have at least one foot on the floor
4. A push shot occurs (see definitions for push shot)
5. A double hit occurs (see definition for double hit)
6. An illegal (“scoop”) jump occurs (see definition for legal jump shot)

LONG RAIL RULE: Upon the final approach of an object ball to it’s intended pocket, any

contact(s) with a rail or inside lip to the pocket itself will not be considered a bank or

rail contact. Conversely, a cue ball brushing a rail before striking an object ball which is

frozen to a rail will be considered a banked shot. It is always advisable and to the

shooters advantage to agree upon frozen balls prior to executing a shot which may involve a

frozen ball. (This rule is irrelevant in call pocket pool.)
BALL POSITIONING: May be done either by hand or with the side of the cue stick or ferrule.

Even after placing the cue ball, a player may, if not satisfied with the placement, make

further adjustments with the hand, cue stick or any other piece of equipment. All legal

shots must be executed with the tip of the cue.

ALL ON THE FLOOR: If the 8-ball is knocked on the floor, it is loss of game. Object balls

knocked on the floor are spotted immediately. If the spot is taken, the ball is placed on a

line directly behind the spot as close as possible without moving other balls. Knocking a

ball other than the cue ball on the floor is not a foul. It might occur that a player

pockets his ball while simultaneously knocking another ball on the floor. In the situation,

it is still his turn and the ball is immediately spotted directly on or behind the foot spot

as close to the foot string as possible.

COMBINATION SHOTS: Combinations need not be called in detail in “call pocket”. The player

must first contact an object from their group and then pocket the called ball in the

designated pocket. Contact any other ball during the shot is permitted. In an "open table"

situation, a player is credited a legal shot even if he initially strikes a group opposite

that of the intended final object ball. (For Example: on an open table, shooting a 2-ball

into an 8-ball into 15-ball is a legal shot if the 15-ball is called). When a player does

not pocket one of his balls but pocket's an opponent's ball, he looses his turn. The

opponent gets credit for the pocketed ball. No pocketed ball is ever spotted.

JUMPS, MASSES AND CURVES: are legal. For a jump shot to be legal, the cue tip must strike

the cue ball above center, forcing cue ball into the table. Any contact below the cue ball,

causing it to 'scoop' off the table, is a foul. Note that if a player is attempting to hit

low on the cue ball during a regular shot (such as a draw shot) and unintentionally 'scoops'

the cue ball, it is not a foul If the cue tip contacts the lower half of the cue ball for

the purpose of jumping, it is deemed an illegal “scoop” foul and the shooters turn ends

Push shot: A push shot occurs when the cue ball and an object ball are frozen together. If

the shoots (pushes) through the balls, it is considered a foul (this will be noticeable

because the cue ball and object ball will travel down table at the same speed). To avoid a

foul, player is required to elevate their cue during the shot. It is the responsibility of

opponent to ask a third party to referee over the shot before it takes place; otherwise foul

cannot be called.

Double Hit shot: Similar to a push shot, with the exception that the cue ball and object

ball are not frozen. Rather, they are very close together (about one inch) and the effect of

a player shooting (pushing) both balls or repeatedly striking the first ball is likely. All

statements mentioned above regarding a push shot apply double hit.

Rack: For a legal rack to occur, the 8-ball must be placed in the center of the rack, a

solid at one corner, and a stripe in the other. The sequence of the remaining balls is not

important. Placing the 1-ball in the front is a matter of courtesy.

In the absence of a well written set of rule for slot tables, these rules, prepared by me,

are drawn from various sources including, Billiards Congress of America, American Pool

Players Association, According to Hoyle, and many other bar, amateur and professional

tournament rules sets but mostly just playing in bars.

Your feedback and suggestions is requested and much appreciated !

he or his stick touch any ball or any part of the table.

In an “open table”

situation, a player is credited a legal shot even if he initially strikes a group opposite

that of the intended final object ball. (For Example: on an open table, shooting a 2-ball

into an 8-ball into 15-ball is a legal shot if the 15-ball is called). When a player does

not pocket one of his balls but pocket’s an opponent’s ball, he looses his turn. The

opponent gets credit for the pocketed ball. No pocketed ball is ever spotted.

JUMPS, MASSES AND CURVES: are legal. For a jump shot to be legal, the cue tip must strike

the cue ball above center, forcing cue ball into the table. Any contact below the cue ball,

causing it to ’scoop’ off the table, is a foul. Note that if a player is attempting to hit

low on the cue ball during a regular shot (such as a draw shot) and unintentionally ’scoops’

the cue ball, it is not a foul If the cue tip contacts the lower half of the cue ball for

the purpose of jumping, it is deemed an illegal “scoop” foul and the shooters turn ends

I completely agree! My wife and I went on their flat plan and went to pay them two months ago and could not find the account number. They would not let us pay until we could verify the account number. The person on the phone would not allow us to verify by our address and we could not find any of our previous bills (probably filed away somewhere). Well, we asked to be sent another statement in the mail so we could get our account number off of it. The guy then, in turn, said he would mail out an additional statement for a service charge. We explained that we did not receive a statement as we had previously mentioned and that is why we had to dig to find their number. He would not back down so we finally had to agree or have our gas shut off. We never received the statement and tried to pay a couple more times and finally were told that if we could give our stupid PIN number to them they would ALLOW us to pay. Well, what the heck is this PIN number they refer to. We live at this stupid address- now let us pay. Another month goes by and still no bill. Keep in mind that we stopped receiving bills after we went to the flat-rate plan. Nice- so, if you go to their flat-rate plan you pay a small amount per month, but if you are late for a payment you owe back pay. Well, we never received a bill and after calling over and over we still could not pay them because of their ridiculous requirements. We came home the other day to find that our gas had been shutoff and a note saying we owe them over $700! WTF?!?!?!!? I don't think so! My wife just called them and explained that the previous reps we spoke to said they would note to our account all things previously mentioned. The person just now said that there are no notes and we owed them over $700 before the gas would be turned back on. I hate this company! I don't have $700 just sitting around to give them! Seriously?! What am I to do?!!?!?! I hate you KG! You pieces of crap!

well, long time no see eh.

During a random and unexplained attempt at Googling past individuals from my high school days. I come across Travis Bradshaws blog. I would expect nothing less, given the fact hat you were one of the few rational and foresighted people in the school. But this particualr post of yours intrigued me for I myself have been in the </b>exact same predicament</b>. I however, disregard the toll free number and go to the bank and sit down with the manager. The first three occasions that this occurred I was a able to get my fees refunded. This last time, I decided that enough is enough and in my best JFK impression, I unleashed a requiste monologue determined to change the system. About an hour and a half later, after being given the same response you were given, I was told in six months time, holds would be viewable.

IMO - the bottom line is that it is not right. A financial institution does not have the right to withhold information that affects the balance of my account from me. They cannot be privy to information that if withheld from me, could potentialy result in fines against me, while inccuring a revenue (more than likely profit however) derived from those very fines.

I felt cheated and like I had been robbed. The institution must be responsible and accountable to their customers.

Anyway, from the looks of things, you are doing well. I am happy to hear this and of course, feel free to send me an e-mail if the urge should arise.

I would send you to my blog, but I am so lazy at posting it would be irrelevant.

Are ya running 1gb or 2gb ram?

I haven't tried this, but I saw it before. Combine your SATA drivers onto the XP cd. Would be better than the floppy method (if ya don't have one).

You may already know abou this, but Official Playstation Magazine currently comes with a demo disk containing four songs from GHII:

Kiss - Strutter
Motley Crue - Shout at the Devil
Van Halen - You Really Got Me Girl
Rush - YYZ

Needless to say, I rushed out and bought it at Hastings immediately, then proceeded to play the through the set list about 20 times.

Travis,

It is very refreshing to see an educated, intelligent person put this in perspective. As a branch manager for INTRUST in Wichita, I deal with this nearly every day, yet very few of my customers have taken the time to actually learn what happened. It's an imperfect system, but there are those of us that are trying to make it better. I've encouraged all my employees to read your "rant" and I believe they all gained something from it. Thank you.

Also, in the case of a merchant placing a hold for over the amount of the purchase (something we try to discourage) our bankcard department will refund any fees due to that hold, as you have no control over the amount they authorize. Hope this helps.

Sincerely,
John
